Brothers That Just Do Gutters Franchise SBA Loan Case Study
A First Bank of the Lake SBA Success Story
The Challenge
After years in healthcare as a Nurse Practitioner, Mario Owens felt increasingly drawn toward business ownership. He loved helping people, but the industry had shifted in ways that no longer aligned with his goals. Encouraged by a long-time mentor who assured him he had the skills and temperament to succeed as an entrepreneur; Mario began exploring franchise opportunities that would give him more control over his future.
Mario turned to a local entrepreneurship group for guidance as he explored business ownership. Through that network, he was introduced to a franchise broker who helped him narrow down eight franchise possibilities to his top three. The franchise he ultimately chose stood out for its culture, support, and values that matched his own. But the final nudge came unexpectedly — while wrestling with the decision of which franchise was the right fit, he passed a Brothers Gutters truck on the highway moments after meeting with the franchise. He took the timing as a clear “sign” that this was the opportunity he should pursue.
Even though Mario had some home-improvement experience, stepping into the gutter industry was new territory for Mario. He decided to purchase two territories initially, planned to bring on a manager, and leaned on a trusted colleague with two decades of industry know-how to help him get up and operating. But to move forward, he needed financing that could cover the initial start-up expenses and that would position him to hit the road running from day one.
He also needed a lender who understood the franchise model, could guide him through the SBA process, and would communicate clearly from start to finish.
The Solution with First Bank of the Lake
Mario was introduced to First Bank of the Lake through his entrepreneur business group and FranFund. Of the two lenders he was referred to, he found himself most comfortable with First Bank of the Lake after reviewing materials, researching the bank, and evaluating its experience with franchise lending.
Even though his SBA loan through First Bank of the Lake was approved and ready to fund in December, the franchise advised him to wait until March to launch to avoid a soft winter season. This recommended delay created valuable breathing room for Mario, and he spent that time completing documentation, strengthening his operational plans, and ensuring everything was in order before moving forward.
He describes the SBA 7(a) experience as “streamlined,” “step-by-step,” and far easier than expected. His franchise consulting group helped keep him on track, but he credits much of the positive experience to the responsiveness and professionalism of First Bank of the Lake employee, Kimberly Kooreman, who guided him throughout the process.
“Kimberly was amazing throughout the whole process. Communication was great. Everything was smooth. I would recommend her to anyone.”
With strong preparation, a clear plan, and a lender deeply experienced in SBA franchise financing, Mario secured the funding he needed to purchase and launch both territories.
The Results
In March 2025, Mario launched his Brothers That Just Do Gutters franchise. The first several months were spent building brand recognition, expanding local outreach, and putting stable systems in place. With those elements established, he’s now seeing real momentum, especially in the commercial space, where new opportunities are helping the business take off.
Momentum has been building quickly for Mario’s franchise. He and his team have been connecting with more commercial clients, strengthening its presence, and finding its place in the market. With the business performing well and visibility continuing to rise, Mario is excited about future growth opportunities and is looking forward to opening his second territory soon.
When asked whether he would recommend First Bank of the Lake to other franchise owners, he didn’t hesitate:
“I would definitely refer anybody. No questions asked. And I’d love to work with you guys again when I expand.”
Mario is one of many franchise owners who launch their first territory with First Bank of the Lake and hopes to return as he scales. His experience reflects the bank’s understanding of franchise models, responsiveness, and ability to guide new owners through complex SBA financing with confidence.
